The 19th century saw the introduction of several new kinds and categories, in some part as a departure from the excellent sonata kind bigger and expanded by Beethoven. As a result, numerous authors, particularly for the piano, were turning towards more intimate character pieces. These minis enabled the short expedition of a concept, whether technical or psychological. Amongst the new categories appearing at the time was Chopin’s Mazurka, a fusion of 3 Polish dance types with the classical customs of the author’s homeland. The three dance kinds, the Mazur, the Kujawiak, and the Oberek, are in some cases discovered in their pure kind, but often are combined with each other or with other genres or styles. The Mazurka allowed Chopin to explore many different dynamic, harmonic, and melodic colors, and to develop many different characters and characteristics. The outcome is a genre that cannot be described universally, each piece being special.
The Mazurkas of opus 33 each present distinct traits and qualities. The very first, significant Lento, has a lyrical, expressive melody line over a waltz pattern in the bass. The state of mind shifts effortlessly between mournful and hopeful, with a cherished and fragile intimacy. The second Mazurka is a real Oberek, impetuous, fast, and with strong, irregular accents. The mood is jubilant, with playful, comic tremolo figures. The coda is complimentary and filled with flurries. The third piece of the collection, significant Semplice, is genuinely a basic and innocent approach to the genre. The sweet, tender melodic line is supported by subtly accented second beats, keeping the flavor of the dance. The last Mazurka includes balanced interest to the set, with the grace notes and trills bringing a rustic, native feel. The piece is written in rondo form, with a number of various characters appearing in the episodes in between the recurring initial theme.
