Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Sonata No.1 in C minor, Op. 4 was written in July 1828 during the time that Chopin was still a student with Józef Elsner, to whom the sonata is also dedicated. The piece was not published until 1851, two years after Chopin’s death despite the low opus number. It is considered as a highly underestimated sonata in both musical difficulty and quality.
The sonata has four movements:
- Allegro maestoso (C minor)
- Menuetto (E♭ major)
- Larghetto (A♭ major)
- Finale: Presto (C minor)
